The Carolina Reaper – one mean pepper. Intensely red and mouth-numbingly hot! This bad boy provides the fireworks for our very, very hot edition of the Lyons’ Den Fire Starter Burger.
The delightfully fruity Carolina Reaper has merited a name for itself as the planet’s fieriest chilli pepper. Surpassing the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion in the Guinness Book of World Records back in 2013. Creator, mad scientist and chef Ed ‘Smokin’ Currie concocted the fireball in a greenhouse in Rock Hill, California. Founder of the PuckerButt Pepper Company, Ed experimented with a recipe of Pakistani Naga and Red Habanero chillies, and unearthed a winning combination.
How does the Carolina Reaper compare?
Swooping in at the top of the Scoville scale, the official measure of chilli potency, experts rated the average level for a batch of ruby-red Carolina Reapers at a scorching 1.5 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU). To put this into some context: a bell pepper starts off the scale at 0; a Jalapeño is a measly 3,500 on average, and the infamous Scotch Bonnet, grown in the Caribbean, comes in at a modest 400,000 at max. Just shows how fiery this impressive pepper actually is.
Flick through the Guinness World Record Book and the Reaper’s notorious name crops up again. In April this year, Jamaican Wayne Algenio set the record for the most Carolina Reaper peppers eaten in 60 seconds. Believe it or not, this fearless man powered through a mindboggling 22. And we thought one was terrifying enough!
